Registration of birth - Embassy of Hungary in

Registration of birth

Who needs to attend the appointment?

Both parents need to attend the appointment.

You do not need to bring your baby with you but make sure to have a passport photo of him/her if you would like to apply for a passport (white background, mouth closed, eyes open). Please be informed that for children under 6, it is possible to issue a passport without having to wait for the birth registration to be complete (2-3 weeks) but for children above 6, a passport can only be issued after the birth registration is complete (2-4 months).

In case a voluntary acknowledgement of paternity is required, minors above 14 also have to attend the appointment.

What do I need to present upon my visit?

  1. Original birth certificate

For children born in the UAE, you need to provide a hard copy of the English birth certificate with (1) UAE MOFA attestation and (2) our Embassy’s diplomatic legalization. First you need to obtain the UAE MOFA’s attestation stamp, after which we will do the rest on your appointment. This is needed to verify the document’s authenticity to the competent Hungarian authority. Please be informed that we cannot legalize UAE MOFA attestations that were stamped prior to July 2023.

If your child was born in a different country, you are advised to contact us at consulate.abu@mfa.gov.hu to seek guidance on attestation and translation requirements.

  1. Proof of citizenship and identity

In case of Hungarian citizens: valid Hungarian passport or national ID card

In case of non-Hungarian citizens: for citizens of any EU member state, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland valid passport or national ID card, for citizens of all other countries, valid passport only

  1. Proof of child’s family status

If the child was born from your valid marriage, you need to submit your Hungarian marriage certificate OR if your marriage hasn’t been registered yet, the documents required for the registration of marriage.

If the child was born outside wedlock, kindly contact us for guidance.

  1. Hungarian parent’s address card

After the registration of birth is complete, the child will be enrolled into the Hungarian Personal Data and Address Register. A child can be enrolled with either parent’s official residential address, (1) as a Hungarian citizen living in Hungary OR (2) as a Hungarian citizen living abroad. If both parents are Hungarian citizens, the child’s residential address must match the address on one of the parents’ address cards (if both parents have a Hungarian address, at least one of them has to declare their settlement abroad to register the child with a UAE address). If one of the parents is a non-Hungarian citizen, the child can automatically be registered with a foreign address.

  1. Forms filled in

Please fill in the forms with a blue ink pen or typewriter and do NOT sign it anywhere.

  • Hungarian citizens have to provide their official residential address appearing on their address card. This may be a Hungarian (or other non-UAE) address even if you reside in the UAE. (page 1, section I)
  • You only have to declare your child’s foreign nationality if the child already has a foreign passport. (page 2, section II/B)
  • You don’t have to provide your individual electronic registration ID if you don’t know whether you have one or not. (page 2, section III/A)
  • Your Hungarian personal identification number (magyar személyi azonosító) can be found on your address card (begins with 1 or 3 for males and 2 or 4 for females). (page 3, section III/A).
  • The multilingual translation aid is only accepted in the EU as a translation. The Hungarian birth certificate itself contains details in Hungarian, English and French. (page 4, section IV)
  • If any parties do not speak Hungarian, the interpreter will be our desk officer. Our desk officer will translate everything into English. If you need interpretation in another language, kindly ensure you have an interpreter with you. (page 5, section VI)
  • If you need the original birth certificate back, we can make a certified copy of it and send that to Hungary – make sure you ask for this upon your visit (page 6, section VII).

How long will the procedure take?

Processing time is 75 days by law (not including a possible deadline extension in case additional documents are required). This deadline is counted from the time the competent Hungarian authority receives your application. Including delivery time to Hungary and back, the procedure usually takes 2-4 months. You will be notified via e-mail when the birth certificate is ready for collection.

The passport will be ready within 2-3 weeks. You will receive an e-mail notification.
