If you have an official residential address in Hungary that also appears on your address card but you have moved abroad permanently, you may register your foreign address in Hungary. This means that your status will change to ’Hungarian citizen living abroad’ in the Hungarian Personal Data an Address Register and your new address card will say ’foreign address’ instead of a specific Hungarian one. You can start the registration online or from our Embassy. In case you move back to Hungary in the future, you will be able to register a Hungarian address as your residential address again.

Who needs to attend the appointment?
If you choose to submit the request at our Embassy, you have to do it in person. For minors, we need both parents to attend the appointment and also children above 14. Please be aware that you can only register a foreign address for your child if one of the parents already has a foreign address (i.e. non-Hungarian citizen or Hungarian citizen with an official foreign residential address).
You can do the procedure online as well at www.nyilvantarto.hu/ugyseged, but you still need to submit your old Hungarian address card with your Hungarian address on it. You can send it with a proxy or even courier service, just make sure you attach a copy of your passport and the case IDs you received (webes ügysegéd azonosító és ügyazonosító).
What do I need to submit upon my visit?
- Declaration
- Address card request form if you wish to request a new card
- Valid Hungarian passport or national ID card
- Original Hungarian address card – this will be sent to Hungary and you will receive a new one if you submit a request (not automatically)
-
- If you lost your address card, you need to write a declaration – aware of your criminal liability – why you cannot submit it
- Proof of marital status – if you are married/divorced/widowed, you need to submit your Hungarian marriage certificate/late spouse’s death certificate
- For minors, the child’s Hungarian birth certificate and both parents’ valid ID is required (for non-Hungarian citzens the following IDs can be accepted: for citizens of any EU member state, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland passport or national ID, for all other countries passport only).
When will I receive my new address card?
New address cards usually arrive within 2-3 months. You will receive an e-mail notification. If you submitted your request online, you will receive a notification on the same platform.
