Proof of marital status ENG - Embassy of Hungary in

Proof of marital status ENG

You cannot get married at our Embassy. If you are planning to get married in the UAE, you are advised to contact the relevant family/civil court to seek guidance.

You will need a certificate of marital status that proves your current marital status to the competent UAE authorities, thereby showing whether there is an impediment for you to get married.

After you got married, as a Hungarian citizen, you are required by law to register your marriage in Hungary. For further information, please click.

Who needs to attend the appointment?

You can submit your request in person.

What do I need to present upon my visit?

* On the request form you need to choose between two options – the certificate can either be issued as a consular certificate (konzuli tanúsítvány) or as an official certificate (hatósági bizonyítvány). The former is an English certificate issued, stamped and signed by the consul based on the Hungarian Personal Data and Address Register. The latter, on the other hand, is only issued in Hungarian by the competent authority in Hungary. This takes approximately 8-10 weeks, after which you will have to take care of the necessary attestation and translation requirements. This official certificate can be requested in any government office in Hungary (even through a proxy) or online on E-papír (with Client Gate or Digital Citizenship access).

If you need to use this certificate in front of an authority of a country that requires Apostille-certification/diplomatic attestation and translation, it is generally a better option to request an official certificate. However, based on our clients’ experience, UAE authorities accept consular certificates as proof of marital status – please make sure to double check this with the relevant family/civil court.

When will my certificate be ready and how will I know?

Consular certificates are issued on the spot, while official certificates take about 8-10 weeks.
